3.5 million set aside to resuscitate CCTV cameras in Mahikeng

In an effort to fight crime in the capital city of the Province, Mahikeng, the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management has set aside a budget totalling R3.5 million to resuscitate the Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras.

Tabling his Department’s budget speech for the financial year 2021/22, the MEC for the Department, Mr Sello Lehari said the project is expected to create a minimum of 12 jobs.

“This Multi-stakeholder project has had enormous impact and will be the eyes and ears of the police in the fight against crime in the provincial capital city. We will strengthen collaboration with all primary stakeholders in all districts for a greater impact,” said Lehari during the budget vote.

The MEC said the success in resuscitating the CCTV cameras would not put an end to the established integrated approach in the fight against crime.

“ We must remember that the fight against crime is everybody’s responsibility,” said Lehari emphatically.

The Mahikeng CCTV cameras were installed in 2015 on areas, corners, intersections and junctions regarded as crime hot spots within Mahikeng.
